Learn how check rails and guard rails prevent derailments and improve safety in tight curves, bridges, tunnels, and other high-risk track areas.
Check rails and guard rails are essential safety components used to prevent derailments, control wheel guidance, and protect structures in high-risk areas such as sharp curves, bridges, tunnels, turnouts, level crossings, and constrained urban environments. This course provides a clear and practical understanding of how check rails and guard rails function, how they interact with wheel flanges, and how their stiffness, clearances, fastening configurations, and wear characteristics influence both safety and ride quality. Learners explore installation tolerances, gauge setting, alignment challenges, material choices, flange contact behaviour, noise implications, and the unique considerations for transitions from open to embedded track. The course incorporates real-life good and bad practices from metro, tramway, freight, high-speed, and heavy-haul systems worldwide, delivered by experts deeply involved in track safety and wheel–rail interface design from technical, operational, and commercial perspectives. Ideal for track engineers, project managers, maintenance teams, QA/QC specialists, procurement professionals, sales teams in track safety and steel component industries, and students in civil, mechanical, and transportation engineering disciplines, this course equips learners to evaluate check rail and guard rail solutions, optimise installation and maintenance strategies, and ensure safe performance in high-risk sections of the track network.
